Griffins Earn A Key Road Win Against Iowa Wesleyan
MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa.— The Fontbonne University men’s soccer team came away with a key St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) win on Sunday afternoon as they defeated Iowa Wesleyan, 3-1.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa.— The Fontbonne University men's soccer team came away with a key St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) win on Sunday afternoon as they defeated Iowa Wesleyan, 3-1.
"I'm very proud of our effort," said head coach Donnie Alberty. "Anytime you can go on the road and win in our conference, you have to be pleased. We battled some adversity and found a way to win."
The Griffins (7-4-1; 2-1 SLIAC), totaled 12 shots in the win and were paced by Greg Ferry's two goal performance. Blake Smugala, meanwhile, scored his fourth goal on the year which turned out to be the game winner.
In net, Jordan Alberici stayed perfect on the season as he's now 6-0 after making four saves against the Tigers.
Iowa Wesleyan (5-5-2; 1-1 SLIAC), contributed 11 shots and they got its lone goal from Fabian Arvizu. In goal, Elijah Perez did what he could with his six saves on nine shots.
In the first half, it was a back-and-forth game early on until the Griffins broke through in the 14th minute. David Keeven was able to find Ferry and he beat Perez to give FBU a 1-0 lead.
That score remained the same until the 23:05 mark when Smugala scored an unassisted goal of his own to make it a 2-0 game.
The Tigers outshot the Griffins 3-1 in the final minutes of play, however, Fontbonne headed into the break on top by two.
In the second half, the Tigers got right back in it at 46:25 on Arizu's goal. Then, at 49:37 Nick Wolf saw his header get saved by Perez. However, eight seconds later, Perez couldn't stop the next attempt with Ferry scoring off an assist from Schmidt to push the advantage out to 3-1.
It was a physical battle between the two teams the rest of the way, but the Griffins were able to hang on and take the 3-1 victory.
They'll look for its second straight win and fourth out its last five against Greenville on Thursday. Kick-off is set for 5 p.m.
