Men's Soccer Tied For Second In SLIAC Preseason Poll
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) released the 2018 Men’s Soccer Preseason Poll and the Griffins come in tied for second.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) released the 2018 Men's Soccer Preseason Poll and the Griffins come in tied for second.
Webster, who was the No. 2 seed in the SLIAC Tournament last season, are picked to finish first this year with 68 total points and three first-place votes.
Westminster won its fifth straight SLIAC Tournament Championship in 2017 and they come in at No. 2 with 64 points, to go along with three first-place votes. The Griffins, meanwhile, are one point ahead of SLIAC Tournament Runner-Up Principia.
Fontbonne also totaled 64 points and they'll enter this year looking to build off last season's success under second year head coach, Donnie Alberty. In 2017, the Griffins compiled 13 wins, its highest since 2013, and won the SLIAC Regular Season Championship for the first time since 2013.
This season, the Griffins will be looking to replace the likes of Greg Ferry, Corey Schmidt, Jordan Alberici, and Tony Pitaro, all of whom were named to the All-Conference Team. Ferry was also named Co-Defensive Player of the Year.
The team does return seven starters, including All-Conference honorees Nick Wolf, Blake Smugala and Nick Nelson.
Newcomers Bryan Carrol (Hazelwood, Mo., / Hazelwood West) and Zach Lyeki (Hazelwood, Mo., / Hazelwood West), along with the rest of the roster will look toward continued success in 2018.
