ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team dropped its final non-conference game against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, 5-0.
"The other teams also train every day and they're trying to win as well," said head coach Donnie Alberty. "If you come out flat, other teams will punish you. We came out flat tonight and got punished for it. If we come out flat on Saturday, we will get punished then also. So we will see what happens."
The Griffins (3-6), were limited to eight shots on the evening with eight different players having at least one shot. In goal, Drew Blair was dealt his second loss after making one save.
Rose-Hulman (3-4-1), finished with 14 shots and were led by the two-goal performance from Michel Farhat. In net, Pascal Schelle got the win after making four saves.
In the first, Chris Fusaro had the ball on the far left side of the field for the Fightin' Engineers. He crossed it over for Farhat and he buried his shot to give them the 1-0 lead.
The Griffins had a chance for a goal at 35:13. A foul was called on Rose-Hulman and Marc Roellig took the free-kick. He tried to catch Schelle off guard with him setting his wall in front of him, though he was able to make the diving save.
Prior to the half ending, the Fightin' Engineers struck once more. Tyler Foster found Connor Claussen on the near side. Claussen had some space and he ripped his shot past Blair, giving the visitor's a 2-0 lead at the break.
Despite the Griffins efforts, Rose-Hulman tacked on three more second-half goals en route to the five-goal win.
Fontbonne looks to bounce back in its first conference game this weekend at Eureka. Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m.
