Dierker, Gibbs And Wolf Score In Win Over Blackburn

CARLINVILLE, Ill.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team picked up its fourth shutout win in its last five after defeating Blackburn, 3-0.

"Happy with the way the guys played," said head coach Donnie Alberty. "Our midfield with Blake Smugala, Jason Dierker and Andres Castro were able to control what we were trying to do. They did a very good job of switching the point of attack and were very effective all day."

He continued, "Blackburn definitely looked better than their record indicates and we are looking forward to Westminster on Wednesday."

The Griffins (7-7; 4-1 SLIAC), owned a shot advantage of 15-1. Nick Wolf, Charles Gibbs, and Jason Dierker all scored for Fontbonne. It was also Gibbs first on the season and Dierker's first collegiate goal. In net, Drew Blair picked up his fifth win.

After having a 4-0 shot advantage early, the Griffins got on the board in the 30th minute on Wolf's team-high seventh on the season. Prior to the half ending, Dierker extended the lead out to 2-0 with 15.0 seconds remaining.

In the second half, the Griffins continued its offensive push and made it a 3-0 game at 56:17 on Gibbs' goal. It was all Fontbonne the rest of the way as they went on for the three-goal win.

The team returns home on Wednesday night for a showdown against Westminster. Kick-off is slated for 8 p.m.
