Men's Soccer Drops Its Conference Opener Against Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team dropped its first conference outing against Spalding on Saturday, 2-0.

How It Happened

In the first half, the Golden Eagles opened with a 7-2 shot advantage in the first 30:00 minutes of play but it remained a scoreless contest. Then, in the 36^th minute, the Golden Eagles broke through. Alioune Cisse received a pass near the top of the box and tapped it in past Griffins net-minder, Eric Volk, to give them a 1-0 lead.

In the 38^th minute, the Golden Eagles struck again. After a foul was called on the Griffins just outside the box, the Golden Eagles were awarded a free-kick. Omar Mukoma took the attempt, it went off a Fontbonne player, and right to Trustun Ashburn for the tap-in goal.

In the second half, the Griffins totaled six shots, but Spalding's goalie, Trevor Massa, was able to come up with two saves, and that was enough to secure the shutout win.

Fontbonne Leaders

• The Griffins totaled 10 shots on the afternoon.
• Charles Gibbs led in the shot department with three.
• In net, Eric Volk made seven saves.

Spalding Leaders

• The Golden Eagles concluded with 19 shots.
• Kornell Hilliard led with five shots.
• In goal, Massa made four saves.
