ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team got a late goal from Drew Moser on Senior Night to secure the 1-0 win over Blackburn.
Final: Fontbonne 1, Blackburn 0
How It Happened
Fontbonne opened the first half with a few scoring chances in the 14th and 16th minutes from Drew Moser (two) and Charles Gibbs but the attempts were saved by Beavers goalie, Dawson Klunk.
Gibbs had another shot for goal in the 23rd minute but his attempt went off the post. Each team had a couple of scoring chances late but both netminders stood tall to keep it a 0-0 contest after 45:00 minutes of play.
At halftime, the Griffins honored its four seniors in Bryan Carroll, Ethan Cowell, Charles Gibbs, and Drew Moser.
Each team continued to have its scoring chances but none could break the tie. The Griffins had another one go off the post in the 64th minute when Jared Lyeki ripped his shot past Klunk but once more it went off the right side of the post.
Then, at 70:28, a foul was called on Blackburn and the Griffins were awarded a free kick. Moser stepped into it and his shot got past Klunk and into the right corner of the net giving Fontbonne a 1-0 lead. That was all the scoring needed with the defense fending off any late offensive push from Blackburn for the shutout win.
Hear from Head Coach, Donnie Alberty
"First of all, I'm happy for our seniors. They have fully committed to the program and done everything we've asked them to do. I feel sorry for this whole class for having to work their way through this year, so for us to get the result on Senior Night means a lot."
"Blackburn has improved very much, they are well-coached and they made us earn everything. Those types of emotional matches are what makes this sport so exciting."
