The Tigers opened with an 8-4 shot advantage but Fontbonne goalie Ethan Cowell made six saves through 16 minutes of action.
Then, in the 25th minute, after Charles Gibbs saw his header saved by Vicent Sanchis, the Griffins got the loose ball with Joe Noah finding Trent Calvert at the top of the box and he one-timed it past Sanchis for the 1-0 lead.
The Tigers outshot Fontbonne 10-1 the rest of the way but the Griffins held its one goal advantage intact at the break.
In the second half, the Griffins opened with a 4-0 shot advantage through the 63rd minute but were unable to expand onto its lead.
Iowa Wesleyan held an 11-2 shot advantage after that but the Griffins defense stood tall and with Cowell making five more key saves the Griffins were able to go on for the wild 1-0 victory.
Hear from Head Coach Donnie Alberty
"Very proud of our guys right now. There was nothing easy about this matchup. We left this morning at 7:00 a.m., we traveled through a snow storm to get here, the environment was not the friendliest and we have had three very passionately played matches against Iowa Wesleyan this year. We didn't let any of that affect us and we stayed the course playing exactly the way we needed to play. Excited to move on and play another match Thursday."
Fontbonne Leaders
- Calvert's goal was his fourth on the season and Noah added his first assist.
- Cowell was unbeatable in net making a season-high 12 saves which was two off his career-high of 14 he set back in 2020 against Mary Hardin-Baylor.
