Men’s Soccer Takes Down Principia
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Fontbonne University men's soccer team took down SLIAC opponent, Principia College, in a 3-2 win this afternoon. The Griffins improve to 6-4-2 on the season and 4-0 in conference play.
"Today was a tough one for us," said Head Coach Donnie Alberty. "Principia always plays tough, and we have had some pretty good matches with them over the years. We knew they were better than their record."
In the 20th minute, Brandon O'Dell got the Griffins on board with a goal assisted by Joe Noah.
20 minutes later, Stephen Pryk found Nick Mormino's foot who scored one more for the Griffins to extend their lead to 2-0.
Principia answered with a goal three minutes later. The Griffins went into halftime with a 2-1 lead over Principia.
"We had a very good head-ball goal from Brandon O'Dell to get us on the board and then Nick Mormino made a really good run to put us up 2-0. At that point, you are kind of hoping to get the 3rd goal and coast the rest of the way. But we had a defensive mishap just before half and Prin punished us. So instead of looking for the 3rd goal, we are protecting a 1 goal lead," he said.
In the beginning of the second period, Julian Tilford scored one more for the Griffins assisted by O'Dell. Once again, Principia quickly responded with another goal. The Griffins took a 3-2 victory over Principia.
"Then we get the 3rd goal, great play by O'Dell to Julian Tilford for a tap in, but then we have another defensive let down to give up a free kick 20 yards away. Their player scores a well struck ball and then we have to battle the rest of the way."
The Griffins outshot Principia, 21-13.
Dominic Haggard played 90 minutes in between posts. He recorded six saves with four coming from the first half.
"There are some things we need to clean up, but this year the conference is very balanced, so we will take the points anyway we can get them. Big match Wednesday at Eureka, who is coming off a very good win. Should be exciting."
