Raise It! Men’s Soccer Named SLIAC Regular-Season Co-Champions
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Fontbonne University men's soccer team was named the 2023 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) regular-season co-champions. The Griffins will share the crown with Lyon College. The Griffins concluded regular season with a 10-5-3 overall record and 7-1-1 in conference.
"Today was just everything that being a college soccer program is about," stated Head Coach Donnie Alberty. "We started off at 7:00 a.m. this morning volunteering at the Colon Cancer Awareness walk. We knew that might affect us, but it was important for us to be there. Then, we had Senior night and those 6 Seniors played so well."
The Griffins has clinched the number one seed of the SLIAC Tournament.
"Conner Heern starts us off with two goals in the first few minutes and just sets the tone, then Anthony Dalton makes a very good run to set up the 3rd goal, then Fuad and Wigge played well defensively," he said.
Three minutes into the first period, Conner Heern scored his first goal of the day. Two minutes later, he scored another one to quickly grab a 2-0 lead. His second goal was assisted by Tim Jurado.
Ethan Bromaghim scored one more for Fontbonne in the 35th minute.
With the clock hitting the 70th minute mark, Carter Youmans found the back of the net.
Three minutes later, Jake Schweitzer scored the last goal of the day assisted by Youmans.
Blake Hinerman played 90 minutes in between posts and recorded nine saves.
"Blake Hinerman made all the saves that he needed to, including a fabulous one with about 10 minutes left. And finally, I can't say enough good things about how Rudy played tonight. He is a transfer from Blackburn and has a lot of friends over there. So, for him to put on a performance like that is just so awesome," he shared.
Fontbonne outshot Blackburn, 21-13.
"I am so happy for our guys. They deserve to be champions," concluded Alberty.
