St. Louis, MO – On a night filled with both emotion and excitement, The Fontbonne Griffins took the field for their senior night match, battling a hard-fought 1-1 tie. Tim Jurado had the Griffins first and only goal at seven minutes into the first half. Jurado's goal was assisted by Brandon O'Dell.
Though this evening was about more than just the score. During half time the Griffins took time to recognize the 10 seniors: Dominic Haggard, Luca Roma, Ian Steinkamp, Andrew Kneale, Jacob Lorimier, Tim Jurado, Ethan Bromaghim, Julian Tilford, Preston Stork, and Brandon O'Dell.
"Tonight is a reminder of why sports are such an amazing experience," shared Head Coach Donnie Alberty. "Two competitive teams battling for what is likely the final time, giving each other everything they can handle."
Players like Haggard and O'Dell have been pivotal throughout the season. Haggard leading the SLIAC in saves with 109 after tonight!
"These are the types of nights that are why all these players come to college. I'm happy for Timmy to get the goal on his birthday. I'm happy with how the guys competed and proud of how they have just battled all year," added Alberty.
The Westminster Blue Jays, however, were not willing to go down without a fight. At fifty-four minutes into the game Adam Luetkemeyer scored for the Bluejays.
The remainder of the match both sides saw many chances to score, but neither pulled it off.
"The goal coming into the season was just to play important matches at the end of the year. We have done that and so much more this year. We would have liked to have won the final home match, but honestly it was just an honor to witness it," he concluded.
Despite a fight back from the Blue Jays, the Griffins held their defense firm.
The Griffins and Bluejays both had 12 total shots. Though, the Griffins made double as many saves as the Blue Jays.
