ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Fontbonne University men's soccer team defeated Spalding University on their regular season finale earning a spot in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Postseason Tournament.
The Griffins clinched the fifth spot and will travel to fourth-seeded Spalding on Saturday.
Wednesday's night game was very important and the Griffins did not disappoint as they took the pitch and delivered with a 2-1 win.
"Days like this reveal character. To have to go on the road, to a very difficult place, against a very good team, with our season on the line, and come away with a victory against a team ahead of us in the standings, just defines who we are as a group," shared Head Coach Donnie Alberty. "We received amazing performances from guys all up and down the lineup. It's probably a pretty difficult ask that we have to go right back there on Saturday, but it's a nice feeling that our season did not end tonight. So very proud of them right now."
This win improves the Griffins record to a 5-12-1 overall and 4-4-1 in conference play.
In the 24th minute, Max Sarich found the back of the net to give the Griffins the lead.
With five seconds left in the first period, Spalding tied the game to take the game to halftime tied 1-1.
Ian Steinkamp found Julian Tilford's foot who scored the Griffins' second and final goal of the game, 2-1.
Dominic Haggard earned the win on goal. He played 90 minutes in between posts and stopped five shots with four coming in the first period.
Spalding outshot Fontbonne, 19-12.
