Griffins hand Carthage a tough match
St. Louis- Fontbonne men's volleyball put up a tough fight in their 17-25, 25-23, 22-25 and 19-25 loss to #4 ranked Carthage College tonight. The Griffins held the Red Men to their 6th lowest hitting percentage over their 27 matches.
Fans thoroughly enjoyed the second set as the Griffins flew out to an 8-2 lead before Carthage called a timeout to regroup. The Red Men posted three straight points, only for Fontbonne to counteract with three of their own. Back and forth play ensued until the Griffins held an 18-17 lead. Fontbonne served four consecutive points to lead by five (22-17). With the score at 23-19 in favor of the Griffins, Carthage tied the game. Fontbonne ended the match netting the final too points.
Overall, Fontbonne dominated defensively at the net, with six solo blocks and a season-high 17 team blocks. Drew Lowrey recorded two solo blocks with seven block assists while Justin Rujawitz blocked three attempts on his own with four block assists.
Setter Justin Winkelmann totaed 24 assists, 3 kills, 1 solo block and 4 block assists for Fontbonne. Red Men Connor Wexter ended the match with 55 assists.
Dominic Prospero recorded nine digs while Aaron Graue totaled 15 kills at the net.
The Griffins play their final game of the season at home Saturday, April 5 at 3pm against Dominican University.
