Men's Volleyball goes 1-2 over the weekend
Fontbonne men's volleyball won their first of three games over the weekend, taking down Illinois Institute of Technology in straight sets on Friday. The Griffins then fell to Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League opponents Benedictine University No. 9-ranked Dominican University three sets each. Fontbonne is now 7-5 overall and 0-4 in the MCVL.
Against IIT, Stephen Lendy led the Griffins with 13 kills and a .417 hitting average. Leading the Griffins at the net in accuracy was Zack Pelker with a 60% kill average. Libero Jimmy Stika dug 13 balls as the Griffins defeated the Scarlet Hawks 25-19, 25-23 and 25-10.
Fontbonne fell to Benedictine 22-25, 18-25 and 15-25. The Griffins were eager to land a set from the top-ten ranked Dominican team, forcing the Stars to score 33 points in the first set, but eventually fell 31-33, 16-25 and 17-25.
On the weekend, the Griffins tallied 108 digs, 104 kills and 11 total blocks. Lendy recorded 26 kills while TJ Vorva tallied 16 and Emir Hadzisalihovic 15. Lendy and Vorva each hit .231 while Hadzisalihovic recorded two solo blocks and three block assists. Jacob Lendy assisted for 85 points and was second on the team with 19 digs. Stika led the defense with 28 digs.
Fontbonne travels to Greenville College on Tuesday, February 23 for a conference matchup. This season the teams are 1-1 in non-conference competition, making Tuesday's game all about bragging rights. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
