Naperville, Ill. - Fontbonne University men's volleyball went 2-0 on the day today after sweeping North Central College and Illinois Tech today. Fontbonne is now 13-11 overall and 7-10 in conference play. The Griffins will not play any games next week and will conclude 2017 play at Marian on Friday, April 7 and at Lakeland the following day.
Fontbonne has competed in 24 conference games, the second-highest of any MCVL member so far this season. Even if the Griffins were to lose their last two games of the season, they'll still have a higher conference win percentage this year than last year.
NCC
Fontbonne opened play Saturday against conference rival North Central. Fontbonne out-hit the Cardinals with accuracy, .275 compared to .178 at the net. The Griffins also had better serving and combined for six team blocks.
Brendon Schwartze recorded 11 kills while Zach Rothstein dug out 14 Cardinal attacks. Hadzisalihovic added five more blocks to his totals along with seven kills.
IIT
In non-conference action, Fontbonne battled hard against IIT in the second set to eliminate a possible seventh set on the day. The Griffins trailed 24-23 before coming back to take the set 27-25.
TJ Vorva led Fontbonne with 10 kills on 16 attempts for a .500 average. Kyler van Rossum-O'Connell recorded 12 digs along with three solo blocks and three block asssists. Emir Hadzisalihovic combined for seven blocks against the Scarlet Hawks
ON THE DAY
O'Connell was on fire, tallying 59 assists, seven kills on nine attacks, 19 digs and eight blocks over the six sets. Hadzisalihovic finished with 12 blocks out of the middle slot along with 10 kills. Schwartze led the Griffins with 19 kills on the day. Vorva followed with 16 as Stephen Lendy was close as well with 15 kills. Lendy also recorded 12 digs. Rothstein led the Griffins' defense with 22 overall digs.
