Griffins extend winning streak to 17; prepare for regional showdown
The Fontbonne University women's softball team extended their winning streak to 17 games by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader yesterday with Lindenwood University. The Griffins won 8-5 and 2-0 to improve to 27-9 while remaining at 14-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
In the first game yesterday, trailing 2-0, the Griffins scored seven runs in the fifth inning to pull away. Cara Hargate's two-run single helped fuel the Griffins' big inning. In all, six Griffins tallied at least one RBI in the game.
The second game was much more of a pitcher's duel as the Griffins prevailed 2-0 in eight innings. Freshman Madison Leonard went all eight innings allowing just four hits while striking out five. Lindenwood's pitcher held the Griffin offense in check most of the game but Sarah Cerutti and Marissa Simon had RBI hits in the eighth inning to provide the difference.
Fontbonne, who has not lost in the month of April, will return to the diamond on Friday playing at Washington University in a doubleheader that begins at 4 pm. In the latest NCAA regional rankings, the Griffins were ranked #3 while Washington University was ranked #6.
