St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University softball keeps their undefeated St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record intact against Big Bend rival Webster University tonight. The Griffins hit two home runs in the first game, ending the contest early with a 14-0 five-inning win. After a slow start in game two, the Griffins took down the Gorloks 4-2, improving their SLIAC record to 4-0 and are 11-9 overall.
Game one: It was a big first two innings for the Griffins who posted four hits and four runs in the first with six runs on four hits and two Gorlok errors in the second inning. Freshman Courtney Kedroski hammered a three-run home run in her first at-bat of the day while fellow freshman Sam Brown sailed a two-run homer to give Fontbonne a 10-0 lead. The long-ball was Kedroski's first collegiate home run while Brown's was her second over-the-fence hit in as many games. The Griffins continued to pad their lead for the five-inning win.
Madi Leonard got her sixth win as she struck out four batters in four innings. Lindsay Schaefer pitched the fifth with one strikeout. Fontbonne stole four bases and tried to convert a double-play but committed an error instead. The Griffins are currently first among NCAA Div. III opponents in double plays per game.
Game two: After both teams scored two runs in the first, neither team crossed the plate in the second or third inning. Fontbonne's Schaefer made a diving right-field catch to save a potential Gorlok run for the lead in the third. Fontbonne secured the game-winning run in the fourth and added an extra run in the fifth. Leonard got the win with Schaefer the save.
Fontbonne hosts MacMurray Wednesday at 5 p.m. and ends the week at Iowa Wesleyan Friday afternoon.
