Greenville, Ill. - With 13-3 and 7-0 wins over Greenville tonight, Fontbonne University softball ensures an undefeated (18-0) regular season in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. This marks the second time the Griffins have gone undefeated in the past three years.
Game one: Fontbonne led 2-0 when Madi Leonard and the Griffins found themselves in a jam with the bases loaded in the third inning. Leonard eliminated the threat, striking out the Panther at the plate on a full count. A triple and error in right field scored Greenville's two runs to tie the game in the fifth inning.
In the seventh, Courtney Kedroski got on base with two steals followed by Sam Brown's walk. With runners on second and third, Lauren Faulstich drove in Kedroski for the Griffins' third run. Shannon Fitzpatrick came up big with a triple and no outs to drive in the winning run. Danni Glixman then hit her third home run of the year as the Griffins would total 11 runs in their final stance of the game. Leonard struck out seven in six innings of work, getting the win.
Game two: Cassi Glixman hit a solo home run to left center in the third, her eighth of the season and the only run of the first four innings. Fontbonne then added six insurance runs as the Griffins went through the entire lineup in the sixth inning. Three doubles, one triple, two sac bunts and two singles highlighted the inning. Leonard and Lindsay Schaefer struck out seven Panthers while allowing just three hits in the game.
On the evening, Fontbonne totaled 15 strikeouts on the mound and 20 runs on 21 hits.
Leonard has 21 wins so far this season and has started and won every conference game for an 18-0 SLIAC pitching record.
Fontbonne hosts No. 12 Washington University Friday night at ABC Ballpark in a doubleheader slated to begin at 5 p.m. The game will begin with their Strikeout Against Cancer event and Fontbonne will honor their seniors following the games.
