Softball wins seventh game in a row
St. Ann, Mo. - Fontbonne and Webster finally met up on the softball field after a two-week hiatus from the original schedule date. The Griffins took both conference wins from the Gorloks to advance them above .500 for the first time this season. Fontbonne is now 4-0 in SLIAC play.
Game one
In a blustery and chilly afternoon, Madi Leonard struck out nine Gorloks as she faced 21 batters in five innings for her sixth win of the year. She didn't walk a batter but hit one by pitch and allowed four hits.
Maddie Cooksey, Emelia Modglin, Lindsay Schaefer, Melanie Russo and Alleigh Kruse each recorded two hits in the 8-0 victory. Modglin doubled twice while Cooksey, Russo and Kruse added one double each before the Griffins totaled 12 hits.
Game two
After a quiet first four innings, the Griffins scored nine runs over the next three to finish the game early with a 9-1 six-inning victory.
Modglin singled to open the fourth inning and stole second before she advanced to third on a single by catcher Emily Smith. Schaefer stepped up to the plate with no outs and hit down the third base line, reaching on a fielder's choice. Kayla Winkler, who pinch ran to Smith, advanced to third and Schaefer to second as Modglin was caught in the rundown. Russo hit a would-be sac fly to left that was dropped that scored two runs. She advanced to third on the throw home. Courtney Kedroski laid down a nice bunt to reach first until she stole second. After Webster pitched and the catcher threw back to the circle, Webster's pitcher tried to pickoff Russo at third and committed a throwing error, scoring Russo and sending Kedroski to third. She scored on a Kruse sac fly to center.
Webster's only run came on a home run to right in in the top of the fifth with two outs.
Fontbonne posted two runs in the fifth on Schaefer's line drive through the right side. Emily McNiff pinch ran and sotle both second and third before being stranded. Webster threatened in the sixth with runners on first and second and one out before a line drive was hit right to Russo at first who backtracked to the bag for the unassisted double play.
The Griffins needed three runs to close out the win early and succeeded. Kedroski recorded a leadoff walk and went to second on a Kruse single through the left side. Both advanced a base on the double steal and Diamond Thomas to load the bases with no outs. After Sam Brown struck out, Cooksie hit a short blooper that fell just inside the right line to score two runs. Thomas went to third on teh throw home and scored on Modglin's game-winning hit to left.
Modglin went four-of-four in game two and recorded her third double of the day. The Griffins stole eight bases from Webster who committed three errors.
Fontbonne is off Saturday and travels to Louisville, Ky. Sunday for a 2 p.m. EST doubleheader against Spalding University.
