Softball lands three on NFCA All-Midwest Region Team
St. Louis, Mo. - The Fontbonne University softball team has landed three Griffins on the 2016 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Midwest Region Team, as announced by the Association today. All-Region players are nominated and selected by NFCA member coaches in each of the eight Division III regions.
Senior pitcher Madi Leonard, sophomore outfielder Sam Brown and freshman third baseman Emelia Modglin each earned at-large bids to the Midwest All-Region Third Team. This is the second all-region bid for Leonard and first all-region bids for both Brown and Modglin.
Madi Leonard
Leonard, who was on the inaugural NFCA/Shutt top-50 preseason watch list finished her senior season with an 19-8 record in the circle, 226 strikeouts averaging 10.18 strikeouts per game, a 2.34 earned run average and tossed her first career no-hitter against Spalding University. She is second on the NCAA Division III active career list in multiple categories including game starts (99), victories (72-24 record for a .750 average), strikeouts (749) and strikeouts per seven innings (9.19). The right-hander garnered first-team all-SLIAC honors for the fourth straight year and was the 2016 SLIAC Pitcher of the Year, her second time achieving the honor. Her 226 single-season strikeouts ties her school-record set last year.
Sam Brown
Brown led the Griffins with a .423 batting average, .712 slugging percentage and .512 on-base percentage. The right-handed hitter swung for the fences five times and walked 18 times to lead Fontbonne in yet two more offensive categories. She also tallied 44 hits, 21 RBI's and 11 doubles on the year and was named second-team all-SLIAC.
Emelia Modglin
Modglin jumped out to an impressive .646 slugging percentage and .416 batting average (second to Brown) in her inaugural collegiate season that included a team-leading 47 hits, 35 RBI's, 14 doubles. She also hit four home runs and was named the SLIAC Newcomer of the Year and earned first-team All-Conference accolades.
Fontbonne ended their season 24-13 after winning their sixth consecutive SLIAC regular-season title. In total, eight SLIAC players earned all-region status: three from Fontbonne, three from Westminster College and two from Greenville College.
