Griffins Drop A Heartbreaker In Walk-Off Fashion Against Claremont M-S
TUCSON, Ariz.—The Fontbonne University softball team dropped its two games on Sunday, falling 10-1 (5 innings) against Berry in game one and 8-7 in walk-off fashion against Claremont M-S in the finale.

Berry 10 Fontbonne 1 (5 innings)
In game one, the Griffins (0-8) were unable to get its offense going against Vikings hurler, Meredith Holland. The right-hander went the distance, allowing one run on one hit and struck out three. Courtney Kedroski got the lone hit for Fontbonne, while on the rubber, Brianna Durant was dealt the loss. Out of the pen, though Diamond Thomas shined with her 2.0 scoreless innings of work.
Berry (16-3), scattered nine hits and they were led by Kayla Sangrey going 2-for-2 with an RBI. Pinch-hitter Lauren Evans, meanwhile, belted a 3-run homer.
In the first, the Vikings plated seven run on five hits, capped off by Brooke Whittemore's 2-run homer. They added three more in the third to take a 10-0 lead. The Griffins got on the board in the fourth as Emelia Modglin grounded into a double-play, but Kedroski scored, after she led off with a single.
Holland was able to shut down the Griffins from there and go on for the nine-run win.
Claremont M-S 8 Fontbonne 7
The Griffins totaled seven runs on nine hits in the heart-breaking defeat against the Mudd-Scripps. At the dish, Emelia Modglin led the Griffins going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
The No. 1-3 hitters in Maddie Cooksey, Courtney Kedroski and Alleigh Kruse, meanwhile, combined to go 6-for-10 with three runs scored and five RBI. On the rubber, Maddy Strickland took the loss as she went 6.2 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) and struck out three.
CMS (10-4), scattered 13 and they were led by Carly Roleder's 3-for-4 three RBI performance. Inside the circle, Anna Gurr got the win out of relief as she went 1.2 innings and struck out three. Starter Chloe Amarilla got the no-decision, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs (three earned) and sat down nine.
In the first, the Griffins got on the board on a Modglin double, which scored Cooksey, who led off with a double of her own. The Mudd-Scripps answered with a run in the home half but the Griffins bats took over in the second.
With two outs, the bases were loaded for Kedroski. The Augusta, Missouri, native, ripped a triple to right, clearing the bases and giving Fontbonne a 4-1 lead. Kruse kept the momentum going with a single to left, plating Kedroski, to make it 5-1.
In the bottom half of the inning, CMS plated two on a triple from Reeve Grobecker. Then, in the third, Chloe Amarilla led off with a single and she scored on Carly Roleder's double. Briana Halle went on to trade places with Roleder at second and now it was a 5-5 outing.
CMS regained the lead at 6-5, however, the Griffins responded. Cooksey led off with a walk and moved up a base on Kedroski's sacrifice bunt.
Kruse stepped in and ripped a single to center, scoring Cooksey, to tie the game at 6-6. Then, after a pitching change, Modglin tripled to right and that scored pinch-runner Isabel Hotop, putting them out in front, 7-6.
The Mudd-Scripps, though tied the game in the sixth and after a scoreless seventh for Fontbonne, the Claremont Mudd-Scripps had a chance for the win.
Jessica Fox got things going with a one out double and advanced to third on a passed ball. After a walk, Grobec hit the ball over to third and Cardwell came home with the throw. They got Fox in a rundown and tagged her for the second out in the inning.
Spania played spoiler, though as she hit a liner into centerfield and that scored Mendez to give CMS the walk-off win.
The Griffins return to action on Tuesday morning against Otterbein. First-pitch at 10 a.m.
