Miener Leads Griffins to 6-5 Victory over Rose-Hulman

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fontbonne University softball team splits the doubleheader against Rose-Hulman in non-conference play.
Game 1 Breakdown
The Griffins jumped out on top early with two out, two-run homerun by Hannah Miener, scoring Grace Harlin who had reached on an error by the shortstop. Rose-Hulman answered back with one run in the bottom of the first, 2-1.
The next few innings were quiet until the Fightin' Engineers had a hot inning in the bottom of the fifth. Three walks and three hits later, and Rose-Hulman gained the lead, 4-2.
Rose-Hulman added two more to their tally in the bottom of the sixth with four hits, 6-2.
The Griffins battled back in the top of the seventh. Grace Paez started run with a single, followed up by a single by Michaela Mason. Patience Vandermierden drilled a clutch double, scoring a run. Grace Harlin continued the run with a single, driving in one run. The comeback ended on a ground out to third. The Griffins drop game one 6-4.

Hannah Miener: 1-for-4 with 1 run scored, 2 RBIs, 1 homerun

Game 2 Breakdown
The Griffins got into trouble in the bottom of the second inning, finding themselves down 3-0 after Rose-Hulman connected four hits in the inning.
The Griffins battled right back as Lexi Becker singled, and Alaina Hotop doubled, sending Becker to third. Hannah Miener stepped up to the plate and hit her second homerun of the day, a big 3-run shot, tying it up 3-3.
The Fightin' Engineers weren't finished though, driving in two runs off of two hits and an error bringing the score to 5-3 in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fourth, Grace Paez got on base with a single. Lexi Becker added a single and advanced on the throw, runners on second and third. Alaina Hotop singled, driving in Paez. The Griffins stranded two runners with a pop up to second base, 5-4.
Grace Paez started off the top of the sixth inning with a walk. Abby Richmond came in to pinch run and advanced on a Maddie Holtmeyer ground out to first. Grace Harlin singled, moving Richmond over to third. With runners on second and third in the top of the sixth, Lexi Becker laid down a nice bunt, beating the throw out to first and scoring Richmond. With momentum in the Griffin's corner, Alaina Hotop singled scoring Harlin. The Griffins take the lead 6-5. Freshman pitcher, Hailey Kutz, was efficient, forcing three quick fly outs.
It was up to the Griffins to hold the Fightin' Engineers in the top of the seventh. Hailey Kutz and the Griffin defense came up big, holding Rose-Hulman and breaking their five-game losing streak. Griffins take game two 6-5.

Hailey Kutz: 4.2 innings pitched, no hits, three walks, three strikeouts
Up Next
The Griffins will now head to Jacksonville, Illinois to face Illinois College on Friday, March 25th at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM CST.
