Columbia, MO - The Griffins softball team put up a strong effort but came up short in both games of their doubleheader against the Stephens Stars earlier today. Despite the results, the team showcased resilience and offensive firepower that will highlight their potential moving forward.
Game One
The Griffins battled until the final out in a hard-fought 8-6 loss. The offense came alive early at the top of the first, with Ashley Carrow hammering a home run sending her and Grace Paez to home plate. Later, Jillian Mengel doubled to left field allowing Carrow to score again, keeping the team within striking distance. Only a couple plays later, Karmin Daniels tripled to right field, allowing Abby Alonzo to sneak through home plate. On the mound, Sam Foppe worked through tough spots and recorded two strikeouts, keeping the game within reach. To end the game, Macy Brown fired the ball over the fence, recording a home run.
The Griffins and the Stars tied in hits 12-12.
Game Two
The second game proved to be more challenging, as the Stars' offense took control in the later innings, leading to a tough loss 16-4. However, the Griffins still found bright spots, including a strong start from Brown, who scored right off the bat in the top of the first. Right after, Paez came in hot at the plate stealing home, putting the Griffins ahead 2-0. Later in the fourth, Daniels also stole her way to home base. Lastly, Brown recorded her third home run of the season.
The Stars outhit the Griffins in this game 14-6.
The Griffins will look to bounce back in their next matchup Tuesday, March 11 against Earlham for their Spring Break trip. First pitch is set for 10:30 a.m.
