Carlinville, IL - The Fontbonne University softball team showed resilience on the diamond Tuesday afternoon, splitting their doubleheader with the Blackburn Beavers. The Griffins dropped a hard-fought opener 0-1 before storming back in Game 2 with an impressive 8-3 victory.
Game One
Game 1 was a classic pitcher's duel, with both teams locked in a defensive battle. Despite several chances with runners in scoring position, the Griffins couldn't break through offensively. A single run in the bottom of the first by the Beavers was all the difference, sealing the narrow loss.
Game Two
In the second game, the Griffins came alive. The game started as a defensive battle with no one scoring for the first three innings. At the bottom of the fourth the Beavers sealed the first score. However, the Griffins saw this as their chance.
At the top of the fifth, Grace Paez singled to right field allowing Macy Brown to advance to third. This hit also allowed for Kassidy Chrisco and Allysa Ibarra to cross home plate, scoring for the Griffins. Chrisco and Ibarra added another run to their stats in the bottom of the sixth. Ashley Carrow and Maddie Holtmeyer also scored in the bottom of the sixth. The Griffins plated a total of eight runs and held their opponents to just three behind a strong showing from the bullpen.
Holtmeyer dominated the circle earning the win in Game 2, improving her season record to a perfect 2-0. Holtmeyer delivered a composed performance in the circle, keeping hitters off balance and helping secure the Griffins' 8-3 victory.
The team returns to action later this week against the Eureka Red Devils. They will be back at ABC Field on Saturday, April 26 where a ring ceremony will also be held. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
