Griffins Softball Comes to an End
Written by Payton Siebert
St. Louis, MO - In a game filled with grit, glove work, and plenty of heart, the Griffins closed out its final chapter on the field with a narrow 1-0 loss against the Blackburn Beavers in the SLIAC quarterfinals.
Facing off against the Beavers, the Griffins brought sky-high energy and laser-focused defense from the first pitch to the final out. While the scoreboard may have tipped in the other direction, the spirit in the dugout and on the diamond was a victory in its own right.
Pitcher Sam Foppe tossed almost perfectly in the diamond, holding the opposing team to just one run in a complete game performance that drew cheers, high-fives, and the occasional chirp from Grace Paez. Behind her, the defense turned multiple key plays, showing off the kind of chemistry that only comes from seasons of shared sweat and laughter. Seniors Kassidy Chrisco, Abby Alonzo, and Ashley Carrow all had hits.
Alonzo gave her thoughts on the season, "I thought the season was so much fun! We didn't always get the results we wanted, but we gained lifelong friends and memories to last a lifetime. I wouldn't have wanted to end my softball career with any other group of girls!"
This game also marked a bittersweet end, not only to a season, but to the program itself, as Fontbonne University will be shutting its doors at the end of the academic year. But the final score wasn't what mattered most — it was the friendships, the inside jokes, and the moments that made playing for the Fontbonne softball program something truly special.
The Griffins closed the program as the winningest postseason team in conference history; winning a conference record, 43 games in the record, and 23 tournament appearances. They recorded 10 SLIAC championships including their most recent one in 2022.
So, here's to the final inning, the final high-five, and a team that proved sometimes the best part of the game is simply playing it — together.
