Fontbonne Sprint Football Picks Up First Win In Program History Over Midway

FRANKFORT, Ky.—The Fontbonne University sprint football team picked up its first win in program history on Saturday after knocking off Midway, 27-19.
In the first quarter, the Eagles threatened at the Fontbonne 45-yard line after a turnover. Midway got the ball down to the six, but Avion Bass came up big with an interception to keep it a scoreless game.
The Griffins defense came through once again with 2:29 remaining in the first as KyRon Washington picked up his first interception on the season ending the Midway drive at the 48-yard line.
That interception paid dividends as in the second quarter Chris Reckel, who got the start at quarterback, tossed his first touchdown on the season finding Jaylen Politte for the 17-yard score.
Later, the Eagles got an interception at the and had its drive start at the Fontbonne 33-yard line with 9:21 left until halftime. The Eagles drove down to the Fontbonne five, however, the Griffins defense like it has all season came up with a big stop as Clayton Arrowood and Jaylen Hess tackled Preston Moore on the five on fourth down.
That turnover on downs paid off for Fontbonne on the ensuing possession as they went 96 yards on 13 plays with Reckel rushing it in from five yards out giving the Griffins a 14-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Eagles started off with an on-side kick and recovered it at the Fontbonne 38-yard line. Four plays later, the Eagles got on the board with DJ Palmer rushing it in from 11-yards out trimming the deficit to 14-6.
Fontbonne answered on its next possession as Reckel connected with Reshad Singleton for a 49-yard touchdown pushing its advantage back out to 21-6.
The offenses continued to go back-and-forth with the Eagles scoring once again, this time Palmer completed his pass to Ramire White and he scored making it a 21-12 contest.
On the Griffins next possession, the drive started on its own 36. Fontbonne got it down to the Midway 15-yard line and initially had its touchdown called back on an illegal motion. On the next play, Reckel scampered in from 20-yards giving them the 27-12 lead.
In the fourth, the Eagles got another touchdown from Palmer with 6:14 remaining, but the Griffins defense halted any type of comeback going on for the 27-19 victory.
