Griffins open outdoor season at Billiken Kickoff
Tyler Williams breaks 100m dash record
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne track and field opened their 2016 outdoor season at the Saint Louis University Billiken Outdoor Kickoff.
In a chilly and windy weekend, the men scored two points with Craig Niethe finishing 7th in the 400m hurdles while establishing a school and freshman record in the process. The best performance of the day on the men's side came from newcomer Tyler Williams (pictured) who ran an impressive 11.37 seconds in the 100m dash, shattering the previous record by .68 seconds. Williams then finished his day running a 23.50 200m, which currently is second in school history. Additionally, Chris Brown ran a personal best in the 800m of 2:12.20, besting is old time by about 5 seconds and moving him from 10th to 8th in the school record books.
On the women's side, the sprints and throws group picked up the points helping to stay ahead of St. Louis College of Pharmacy in the final standings. The 4x100 team of Savannah Davis, Brianna Burnett, Taylor McGowen, and Gabi Cruts broke the school record and finished 4th with a time of 54.19 seconds. Cruts continued the scoring for the Griffins picking up three points when she finished 6th in the 100m dash. Also picking up points was Jennie Stare on Friday night, placing 7th in the javelin for two points.
For the first meet of outdoor season, the team performed as expected and will take a week off with spring break coming up before they return to competition at the Washington University Invitational the first weekend of April.
