Griffins perform well at SLU Invitational
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne track and field participated at the St. Louis Invitational this weekend, with record-setting performances once again.
The men's team performed well over two days and continued to build toward the end of the season. Craig Niethe broke his own freshman and school record in the 400 meter hurdles while scoring one point and now stands in fourth place on the SLIAC performance list. He has improved his time with each outdoor race. Additionally, Niethe picked up four points for his performance in the 110 meter hurdles. Other good performances included PRs by Quinn Wilson in the men's javelin moving up one spot on the Fontbonne Top-10 performance list to fifth. Wilson also picked up one point in the triple jump, owning the new school and freshman outdoor records, beating his own record by 0.85 meters while Brian Nguyen tied his personal best in the men's 200 meter dash. Chris Brown ran in the 3000 meter steeplechase for the first time and picked up two points for his performance. The men finished the two-day meet in 13th with eight points.
The women's team continued to set new marks in a variety of events. The highlight was the 4x100 meter relay team of Savannah Davis, Brianna Burnett, Taylor McGowen and Gabi Cruts who broke their own school record with a time of 53.76 seconds and scored one point for their efforts. Their previous record came just weeks prior on the same track. Additional good performances included Kaitlin Becherer hitting a PR in the 1500 meter while breaking into the Top-10 school performance list. Burnett ran a PR in the 400 meter dash and moved to fourth on the school's all-time performance list while Jennie Stare who competed in the 3000 meter steeplechase for the first time ever. She scored two points for the team. Kelly Mundwiller recorded a 9.20m shot put throw, second-best at Fontbonne and finally, Cruts continued to be a dominate force in the sprint, scoring one point in the 100 meter dash. The women finished the two-day meet in 13th with four points, ahead of Columbia College and St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
At the halfway point of the outdoor season, the combined program has broken and/or established 15 school records and has 20 athletes ranked in the Top 10 of the SLIAC Performance List.
Next up will be the SIUE Gateway Invitational on April 15-16 which will be scored in dual meet format.
