Women's Basketball falls to 2-6
St. Louis- During the Tri-Conference Tournament, Fontbonne first fell to Millikin University 61-68. On Sunday, the Griffins fell to Illinois College 48-64. Fontbonne women's basketball is currently 2-6 before heading down to Florida for the Daytona Beach Shootout.
Versus Millikin:
Trailing by 17 with 10 minutes left in the game, junior Ava Johnson connected on a layup to spark a Fontbonne comeback. Fontbonne would out-score Millikin 15-4 to tighten the score 55-59 (Millikin). Millikin would go on to score 9 unanswered points, leaving Griffin fans to wonder what happened with their sudden surge. Fontbonne ran out of time as freshman Nicole Joerger drained 2-3pointers within 20 seconds to end the game 61-68.
Fontbonne was able to connect 83% at the line but the team only shot 33% from the floor, while Millikin shot 51% from the floor, 67% behind the arc and 44% from the line. Three Griffins recorded double digit points against the Big Blue: seniors Allison Hogan (17-her 2nd highest this season) and Hillary Johnson (11), and Joerger (11). H. Johnson also recorded 7 rebounds and 5 steals in the game while only committing 1 personal foul. A. Johnson pulled in a team-high 8 rebounds on the night.
Against the Illinois College Lady Blues:
Defense was the name of the game as after the first four minutes of the game the score was 6-1 Fontbonne. Illinois College would go on a 22-8 streak, to pull ahead 23-14. Foul trouble hurt the Griffins they accumulated 15 fouls while the Lady Blues recorded just 8 in the first half. Going into the locker room, the Lady Blues led 29-18.
Overall the Griffins were out-rebounded by the Lady Blues 48-36. Fontbonne Freshman Samantha Voegtle was the only Griffin to record double-digits points (10) while also bringing in 5 rebounds. The Lady Blues received a double-double from Tiffany King. King brought in 15 rebounds and recorded 12 points on the night. Brittney Burgess was second in Lady Blue points contributing 12.
After their Florida games, Fontbonne returns to the Dunham Student Activity Center for a 6pm contest against SLIAC foe Westminster College.
