Women's Basketball goes 0-2 on Florida trip
St. Louis- The Fontbonne University women's basketball team traveled to Florida to play in the Daytona Beach Shootout. The Griffins went 0-2 on the trip, falling to Knox College 73-54 and Marymount (Va.) 47-48. The Griffins are currently 2-8 on the 2012-2013 season.
The game against Knox was scoreless until Ava Johnson and Samantha Voetgle were able to connect over a minute into the game to give the Griffins the lead at 0-4. Fontbonne would hold onto the edge until 4:40 left to play in the 1st half. Two Griffin fouls would give the Prairie Fire the lead 24-22. Knox would go on with a 5-0 streak to lead at the half 32-24.
Knox would continue to extend their lead into the second half until the final score 73-54. Freshman Samantha Voegtle recorded the only double-double of the game, pulling in a season-high 16 rebounds and adding 14 points for the Griffins. Ava Johnson and Allison Hogan would both narrowly miss their own double-doubles. A. Johnson scored 10 points and pulled in 9 rebounds while Hogan contributed with 9 each.
Fontbonne shot just 12% behind the arc while Knox shot 25%. Knox would also receive the advantage shooting 33% from the floor while Fontbonne connected 28% of the time.
Against Marymount, Fontbonne fell immediately to 0-6. At 14:23, Marymount's Aileen Maknati would connect behind the arc, but the Griffins would go on a 16-0 run within 6 minutes to gain the lead 20-9. The Griffins would walk into the locker room leading 33-21.
During the second half, the Saints gathered themselves to go on an 8-0 run, pulling to within one point with 10:30 left in the game. Fontbonne retained the lead until Katelyn Fischer connected on a 3-pointer giving the Saints the lead 42-40 with 8 minutes to go. The teams would tie at 44, then Fontbonne regained the lead 47-44 after which Tynisha Parks made a jumper to again pull the lead down to 1 with 2:45 remaining. Fouls would ensue, with neither team scoring until Fischer would score the game-winning layup with 26 seconds to go. Fischer then stole the ball with 8 seconds remaining to confirm the Saint victory.
Voegtle finished the night with a season-high 17 points and 6 rebounds. Hogan recorded 10 points and 9 rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double once again. Marymount's Parks would score 15 points, record 3 steals, and 10 rebounds while Fischer recorded 14 points, 3 steals, and 5 rebounds.
Voegtle was named to the Daytona Beach Shootout's All-Tournament Team. She recorded 22 rebounds and 32 points for the Griffins over the two games.
Fontbonne returns home to play Westminster for a SLIAC showdown at Fontbonne on January 2nd at 6pm.
