Webster overtakes Lady Griffins in final seven minutes of play
St. Louis- Fontbonne University women's basketball couldn't hold onto their lead and fell last night to the Webster University Gorloks 58-64. The Gorloks advance to 5-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and pull to .500 (8-8) overall. The Griffins fall to 4-3 in the SLIAC and 5-11 overall.
The first six minutes of play were neck and neck until Fontbonne exploded with a 11-1 run starting at the 14 minute mark until Gwen Williams nailed a jumper to end the Webster drought. Fontbonne held that 10-point lead (22-12) with 8 minutes to play before the Gorloks went on a 12-5 run to end the half only down by 2 (Fontbonne 26, Webster 24).
Webster was able to tie the game 2 minutes into the 2nd half and took the lead on two Maggie Zehner free-throws. Kaitlin Brame scored 5 consecutive Griffin points to give the Griffins the lead once again at 33-32. Fontbonne could only hold Webster off for 5 minutes before the Gorloks regained the lead 44-42 with 10:41 to play. An Ava Johnson 3-pointer would set the Griffins back up with the lead for the next 3 minutes until the score was tied at 52 apiece. In the final 7 minutes of play, Webster would outscore the Griffins 12-6.
Webster's Maggie Zehner recorded the game-high 20 points on the evening. Courtney Pursley was the only player to have a double-double night with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Four Fontbonne starters ended with double-digit points: A. Johnson (13), Allison Hogan and Samantha Voetgle each recorded 11, and Hillary Johnson totaled 10. H. Johnson was 2-3 from behind the arc. The Griffins shot 38% from the field and 53% from long range.
Fontbonne travels to Greenville Saturday for a 1pm start time.
