Free-throw shooting propels Lady Griffins to win over Principia
St. Louis- The Lady Griffins even out their SLIAC record at 6-6 with a 51-41 win over Principia this past Saturday.
Both teams struggled to find the back of the basket throughout the game. Fontbonne only shot 20% from the field, and their 68% from the line carried them through with the win. Principia outshot the Griffins with a still-low 31.5% accuracy from the field.
Fontbonne's Samantha Voetgle finally scored the first points of the game with back-to-back made free throws with 16:42 left in the 1st half. Fontbonne's offense would step up and take a 14-4 lead with just over 10 minutes to go in the 1st half. The Panthers didn't let the Griffis fly away too early. Teams were even at 22 at the start of the 2nd half.
Principia briefly gained the lead with about 18 minutes to go, but Fontbonne's free-throw shooting regained their lead. The Panthers would be chasing after the Griffins the rest of the game.
Voetgle's game-high 16 points (8 each half) and 10 rebounds aided the Griffins in their win. Also recording 10 rebounds for Fontbonne was fellow freshman Erika Kuhn. Voetgle was 8-8 at the line and teammate Hillary Johnson shot 6 of 10 from the charity stripe.
Fontbonne only returns to game-action on Saturday when they travel to Eureka. Women are set for a 1pm tipoff time.
