Voegtle's career-high 22 points helps Griffins stun Webster
St. Louis- Fontbonne freshman women's basketball player Samantha Voegtle scored 22 points and gathered 7 rebounds before fouling out with a minute and a half remaining in the game.
Webster came into tonight's game with a 10-4 SLIAC record, good enough for second place so far. Fontbonne was in the fifth slot with an 7-6 SLIAC record. Webster remains in 2nd and Fontbonne is now tied for 4th with Spalding who takes on Westminster this Friday. Westminster is currently first in the league with a 13-1 SLIAC record so far this season. Spalding and Fontbonne faceoff on Saturday in Louisville, each team hoping to advance to the SLIAC Conference Tournament.
Aggressive basketball was played tonight in Mabee Gynasium and Fontbonne ended the 1st half with a 32-25 edge over Webster.
At the beginning of the 2nd half, Courtney Pursley was all over the court pulling in 3 rebounds and adding a bucket within the first minutes of play as the Gorloks went on an 8-4 run.
The Griffins held onto the lead until 5:29 to go when Gorlok Gwen Williams tied the game at 54 when she sunk her free throw after being fouled on a made bucket.
Fontbonne would gain the lead once again but the Gorloks answered back when Pursley connected on both of her free-throw attempts to tie the game at 56. Webster gained their first lead with 3:54 to go (57-56) and would gain their biggest lead of only 4 points shortly thereafter (60-56).
Voegtle scored a bucket and three free throws to spark Fontbonne's win. Fontbonne went on to win 70-65, making 12 of 13 free throws in the 2nd half. Erika Kuhn contributed in the Griffin win with 12 points and Ava Johnson would end the night scoring 11 points.
The Griffins will step up for the tipoff in Louisville this Saturday at 6pm.
