Griffins fall to Spalding; eliminated from SLIAC Tournament contention
St. Louis- The Fontbonne University women's basketball team lost to Spalding University on Saturday 60-48, which knocked them out of contention for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament. The Griffins fell to 9-14 overall and 8-7 in the SLIAC.
With one game remaining, the best the Griffins can finish in the SLIAC is fifth place. The top four teams in the conference advance to the SLIAC Tournament.
Playing a must-win game Saturday, Fontbonne struggled to shoot the ball in the first half going just 9-26 (35 percent) in the opening 20 minutes. Spalding dominated Fontbonne on the boards in the first half out-rebounding the Griffins 22-13 while building a 31-24 halftime lead.
Fontbonne's shooting woes continued in the second half as they went 6-23 (26 percent) from the floor. Griffin freshman Samantha Voegtle tried to keep the Griffins in the game with a team-high 16 points but it wasn't enough.
For the game, Spalding out-rebounded Fontbonne 51-33 and their bench outscored the Griffins bench 22-2.
Fontbonne will complete their season on Tuesday night when they host Greenville College at 6 pm. Tuesday night's game will also be Senior Night.
