Griffins secure third straight win in dominating 70-40 performance
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne women's basketball continues their win streak today by defeating Blackburn College 70-40. The Griffins' decisive win is their third straight and takes them back to a winning record as Fontbonne now sits 6-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
With a slow start the Griffins took an 8-5 lead after six minutes of play, but scored 20 points to Blackburn's four to lead 28-9 with seven minutes left in the first half. The Beavers didn't back down, closing the gap down to nine points as they went on a 12-4 run to close out the half. Fontbonne led 32-21 at halftime.
Neither team fouled in the first seven and half minutes of the second half. The Griffins went on a 25-4 run to lead 57-25 with 11:43 remaining and never looked back. Fontbonne outscored Blackburn 38-19 in the second half.
Sophomore Olivia Hollander had a big night for the Griffins. Hollander scored 14 points in nine minutes of play in the second half. She finished with 22 points connecting on 11-of-13 attempts, six rebounds, one assist and one steal. Chelsy Gibson was back to her beginning-of-the-season numbers as she finished the game with the only double-double securing 10 points and 12 rebounds. Erika Kuhn narrowly missed a double-double as she totaled 12 points and 9 rebounds. Emmie Haring continues to make her presence on the court known. Haring added 11 more assists to her season total including five points three rebounds and three steals to boot. Lauren Willis added six assists and two steals while Nicole Joerger held a team-high four steals and five rebounds. The Griffins finished with 20 steals on the night.
Fontbonne travels to Louisville, Ky. on Tuesday, January 6th to take on the Golden Eagles. Tipoff is slated for 6pm EST/5pm CST.
