Westminster's three-point shooting too much to handle
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne women's basketball stepped up their defense, forcing the Westminster College Blue Jays to use most of their shot clock each time down the court, Sadie Theroff and Kasey Gatson kept Westminster ahead for much of the game. The two combined for all but one of the team's three-pointers. Fontbonne fell 78-68 and are now 7-9 overall.
First half basketball was back and forth with Westminster holding a 38-34 edge at halftime. Gatson and Theroff were perfect behind the arc before the break going 2-for-2 and 3-for-3 respectively.
Fontbonne got off to a slow start in the second half and found themselves down by 16 points with 13 minutes to go. DeAmbra Pilkinton scored eight of the Griffins' next 16 points to pull within six points of the Blue Jays with six minutes remaining. Fontbonne was still down by six with 2:38 left in the game, but were unable to get any closer.
For Westminster, Gatson was 4-for-6 from downtown as she totaled 20 points on the night. Theroff finished 4-for-5 behind the arc on her way to 13 points. The only double-double of the game was recorded by Blue Jay Mackenzie Haddox who scored 14 points and brought in 10 rebounds.
For Fontbonne, Pilkinton scored her season-high 20 points off the bench going 9-for-14 in the field. Forward Olivia Hollander totaled 14 points while Emmie Haring tallied six assists. Molly Ray came off the bench and got Griffin fans cheering with two big blocks and a huge three-pointer.
Fontbonne is at home again this Saturday, January 24th when they host Eureka College at 1pm. Coaches will be in sneakers for Coaches vs. Cancer Weekend.
