St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne women's basketball succumbed to No. 7-ranked Washington University tonight 80-52. The Griffins are now 1-5 on the year as WashU improves to 9-1.
The Griffins came out strong, pressuring their neighbor and trailed by one point three minutes into the game. The Bears broke open the spread with seven consecutive points as Fontbonne closed out first-quarter play down 21-12. WashU didn't let up, overrunning Fontbonne 22-8 in the second quarter to lead 43-20 at halftime.
With sixteen first-half turnovers the Griffins focused on ball-handling and posted 20 points in the third quarter, led by DeAmbra Pilkinto with eight points. Fontbonne's bench outplayed WashU reserves 12-11 in the final frame. The Bears would make short six to eight-point runs on Fontbonne throughout the game, ultimately leading to their victory.
WashU capitalized on their 56-37 rebounding advantage with 25 second-chance points, compared to Fontbonne's four.
