Decatur, Ill. - Fontbonne University women's basketball began winter break with two losses to cap off a five-game losing streak. The Griffins recently fell on the road at Central College and Millikin University, dropping their season record to 1-7.
After leading 18-14 over Central after the first quarter, the Dutch rebounded for a 21-14 second-quarter advantage leaving the Griffins to trail by two at halftime. Fontbonne held a two-point edge in the third quarter, but Emily Dine's four trey's for Central in the final frame extended the Dutch's lead and ultimate win. Senior Erika Kuhn narrowly missed a double-double, recording 12 points and 9 rebounds for Fontbonne. DeAmbra Pilkinton recorded 20 points in the loss. Junior Emmie Haring was everywhere for Fontbonne, recording nine points as she secured seven assists and seven rebounds as well. Dine's three-point shooting hurt Fontbonne in the end as the guard made six of her nine attempts and finished with 22 points on the evening. The Griffins connected on just two of 13 long-range attempts.
Against Millikin, the Griffins got off to a slow start, down 10-2 in the first quarter but Coach Sias fired the team up after a timeout and only trailed 12-10, forcing Millikin to take a timeout. The Big Blue responded in the same fashion, and ended the Griffins ended the first quarter down 20-11. Fontbonne's best quarters were the second and fourth, trailing by three and four points scored respectively. Millikin held on for the win. Both teams struggled from long-range, with a combined 3-of-25 attempts, all three made buckets occurring in the fourth quarter.
Fontbonne found it hard to contain Millikin forward Alyssa Saklak who scored 27 points and 17 rebounds. Pilkinton led the Griffins with 17 points while Jessica Jordan produced 10 points off the bench. Junior point-guard Haring led the team with six rebounds (6) and five steals.
The Griffins have a week off and return to action to host Rust College on December 29th at 5 p.m.
