Griffins end season in wild finish against MacMurray
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne fell on the short end of a wild finish to MacMurray College today as the Griffins were unable to give seniors Erika Kuhn and Nicole Joerger a chance to go out on top.
With just under seven minutes to go the Griffins trailed 56-60 when freshman Kaitlynn Walker completed the bucket after Emmie Haring stole the ball from MacMurray and passed to her teammate. Walker was fouled and cut the Highlanders' lead to three on her made free-throw. MacMurray gained a 61-55 advantage before Joerger connected on a jumper in the corner. After Joergre stole the ball back, Joerger tried three times to give the Griffins a push and each was rebounded by Fontbonne, giving the Griffins extra hope when finally Lauren Willis found Joerger wide open under the basket to tie the game 61-61.
Unfortunately Fontbonne's momentum shifted the other way when MacMurray nailed a three-pointer. Fontbonne trailed by three with one minute to go but the Griffins were unable to secure another bucket.
Joerger finished with 18 points while team-leading scorer DeAmbra Pilkinton notched 17. The big player of the afternoon was Walker who grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds while also scoring 12 points. Junior Emmie Haring was the game's assist leader once again with eight assists along with her five rebounds while Kuhn capped off her career with six rebounds.
Fontbonne finished the 2015-16 season with an 8-17 overall record and 7-11 SLIAC record.
