SPRINGFIELD, Ill.—The Fontbonne University women's basketball team opened its 2017-18 season with a dominant 74-40 win over Robert Morris-Springfield on Friday night.
After a slow start in the first quarter, Fontbonne exploded in the second by outscoring the Eagles 23-6 to take a commanding 33-11 lead heading into the break. The team continued its strong play the rest of the way in the final two quarters, allowing them to go on for the 34-point win.
The Griffins (1-0), were led by freshman Riley Guffey's season-high 17 point performance. Paige Black, meanwhile, netted a career-high 16 in the victory. Katie Sportsman contributed eight points, while Jillian Venegas added seven of her own.
The team is right back at it tomorrow afternoon at Webster as they'll take on Marian (Wisc.). Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
