ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's basketball team saw its three game win streak get snapped on Tuesday night, falling 84-45 against Harris-Stowe State.
The Griffins (3-1), shot 40.0 percent from the floor but after combining for 26 3-pointers the last two games, FBU went just 6-of-24 on the night.
Individually, Fontbonne was led by Raven Venegas' 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Sarah Schraut contributed nine points, while the duo of Riley Guffey and Kaitlynn Walker added seven points each.
Harris-Stowe (3-3), meanwhile, shot 45.5 percent from the floor, out-rebounded the Griffins 46-31 and forced 26 turnovers.
Off the bench, Amani Ferguson led with her game-high 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Takesia Barnes had herself a game with 15 points and a game-high 12 boards, while Unique Conner and Alantis Sutton added 14 and 11 points respectively.
In the first quarter, HSSU took an 11-7 lead at the 4:03 mark on Alantis Sutton's made jumper. The Hornets continued rolling right along, closing out the quarter on a 14-4 run to take a 25-11 lead after one.
In the second quarter, Fontbonne had its struggles going 1-of-7 from the field and totaled 10 turnovers. That allowed HSSU to outscore the Griffins 21-3 to take a 46-14 lead at the break.
Things improved drastically for Fontbonne in the third. The team was able to beat the Hornets press and make quality passes on the offensive side for multiple open looks.
Venegas rattled off a 4-0 run to cut the deficit down to 52-23 after her made jumper. Despite outscoring HSSU 19-17 in the third and shooting 61.5 percent from the field, the Hornets headed into the fourth on top 63-33.
In the finale, the Griffins tried to get back in it as the clock continued to tick away, however, HSSU was able to fend off FBU and go on for the 39-point win.
The team will now take a couple days off for the holiday break before heading to Monmouth on Saturday and Sunday. The team will take on host Monmouth at 3 p.m., followed by an outing against Knox on Sunday. That game will also tip-off at 3 p.m.
