Griffins Drop Its First SLIAC Outing Against Webster

The Griffins (5-4; 2-1 SLIAC), shot 36.5 percent from the floor and 87.5 percent from the charity-stripe, however the team couldn't overcome its 23 turnovers. Individually, Paige Black led FBU with her 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including going 4-of-8 from downtown.
Raven Venegas netted 17 points and grabbed down at team-high seven boards, while Rylee Stafford went 5-of-6 from the line to finish with 11 points.
Webster (4-2; 1-1 SLIAC), closed out the afternoon connecting on 44.8 percent of its shots from the floor and went 10-of-21 (47.6 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc.
Aley Lucas nearly had a double-double as she finished with a game-high 20 points and nine boards. Kelsey Miller went 4-of-7 from the 3-point arc to finish with 14 points, while Jade Sawyer and Taylor Lucas contributed 11 points each.
In the first quarter, the Gorloks jumped ahead at 11-6 (5:34) on Miller's 3-pointer. With 2:40 to go, Webster led 17-6 but an 8-0 run by Fontbonne over the next minute cut it down to 17-14 on Colleen Ahearn's 3-pointer. Webster closed out the quarter on a 6-2 run and after 10:00 minutes of play they led 23-16.
In the second, Webster rattled off a 10-0 run in four minutes and 37 seconds to take a commanding 36-16 lead. The Griffins, though battled back and after two made free throws from Stafford the team was down just 41-25.
Then, on the ensuing possession, Natalie Busscher turned the ball over and Black banked in her 3-pointer as time expired to make it 41-28 at the break.
After shooting a mere 20.0 percent in the second quarter, the Griffins shot a much improved 42.9 percent in the third. Despite FBU's efforts defensively, the Gorlok's offense continued rolling shooting 75.0 percent from the field and that allowed them to take a 66-48 lead into the fourth.
In the fourth, the Griffins held Webster to an 18.8 field goal percentage but the comeback was not to be as the Gorlok's held on for the 19-point win.
The team returns to the court at home next Tuesday when they'll welcome No. 22-ranked WashU. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
