Women's Basketball Tabbed For Fourth In SLIAC Preseason Poll
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) released the 2021 Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll and the Griffins are picked to finish fourth.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) released the 2021 Women's Basketball Preseason Poll and the Griffins are picked to finish fourth.
Webster, the reigning SLIAC Tournament Champions, hold the top spot with 56 points and seven first place votes. They're followed by Spalding with 44 points and one first place vote. Greenville, Fontbonne and Westminster round out the top-five.
The Griffins ended the 2019-20 season 16-10 overall and set a program-record with 15 conference wins which earned them the No. 2 seed in the SLIAC Tournament.
This year, the team will have newly appointed head coach Mike Fitzgerald at the helm. He'll return the SLIAC Player of the Year and this year SLIAC Preseason Watch List player, Rylee Stafford.
The Jackson, Mo., native, averaged a career-high 16.5 points in 2019-20, shooting 40.6 percent from the floor, 35.1 percent from downtown, and a career-best 80.9 percent from the free throw line. She also became the eighth player all-time at Fontbonne to reach 1,000 career points.
The team also welcomes back guards Kourtney White and Riley Guffey. White ended the year averaging 8.6 points and dished out a team-high 2.8 assists per game. Guffey, meanwhile, averaged 6.8 points and connected on 37.0 percent of her shots from downtown.
Jillian Venegas will be another player to look out for after she averaged a career-high 7.3 points per game in 2019-20.
The team welcomes in Kya Harbour, Caroline Daughtry, Heaven Davis, Aubrey Hubbard, and Rylee Pickett who look to make an impact this year.
The Griffins get its season started on February 27th when they'll visit Westminster. Tip-off at 1 p.m.
