Women's lacrosse grabs 1st win of the season
St. Louis- Fontbonne University women's lacrosse saw goals from seven different players in their 16-4 victory over the Dubuque University Spartans. The Griffins even out their record at 1-1.
Freshman Paige Pfankuch scored the 1st goal of the game on a free position shot with 28:36 left to go in the first. Twenty-six seconds later senior Carolann Brenzo grabbed her 1st goal of the season. Fontbonne would score the next 5 goals before Judy Borah found the back of the net for Dubuque with 16:44 to go before halftime.
Fontbonne finished the half scoring five more goals. To start the 2nd half, the Griffins found the back of the net 4 more times. Dubuque ended the game scoring the final 3 goals.
Fontbonne's Christine Lowes and Lyndsey Godier scored their first collegiate goals during the game. Brittny Radley, Tierney O'Brien and Alek's Cogdill scored for the first time this season as well.
Leading Fontbonne's attack was Brenzo with 5 goals on 7 shots, 2 assists, 5 draw controls and 7 ground balls. O'Brien scored 4 of 5 shots and assisted twice; Lowes scored on both of her shot attempts and grabbed 5 ground balls; and finally Pfankuch pulled in 5 draw controls and scooped up 7 ground balls to add to her goal. Also contributing on ground ball cleanup was Godier with 6.
Borah scored 3 of the 4 Spartan goals.
Fontbonne travels to Wisconsin this weekend to open MWLC play, taking on the Concordia University Falcons and Beloit College Bucs. Start time on Saturday against the Falcons is set for 2pm with live stats and video. On Sunday, the Griffins will start warming up early in the morning for an 11am game start.
