The Fontbonne University women's soccer team opened their 2013 season yesterday by defeating Austin College 2-0 in Sherman, Texas.
Playing in 100 plus degree heat, the Griffins played a dominant defensive game holding Austin to just three shots on goal. After a scoreless first half, Griffin junior Kayla Thorpe opened the scoring for Fontbonne in the 50th minute blasting a shot past the Austin netminder. Freshman Savannah Davis earned her first career collegiate point by assisting on Thorpe's goal.
Twenty minutes later the Griffins extended their lead when sophomore Paige Pfankuch scored on a free kick. Fontbonne's defense did the rest as junior goalkeeper Meggin Werner earned her first shutout of the season.
For the game, Fontbonne outshot Austin 11-9 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Fontbonne will return to the pitch on Thursday night when they host Lindenwood-Belleville University at 6 pm.
