The Fontbonne University women's soccer team overcame an early goal to remain unbeated in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) defeating Westminster College last night 2-1. The Griffins improved to 8-3-3 overall and 4-0 in the SLIAC.
Westminster opened the scoring in the 12th minute converting on a corner kick to take an early 1-0 lead. Despite numerous chances, Fontbonne was unable to find the back of the net in the first half. The Griffins outshot Westminster 7-2 in the first half and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In the second half, the Griffins continued to take the game to the Blue Jays. Fontbonne outshot Westminster 10-1 in the second half with a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Griffins persitence paid off in the 61st minute when freshman Savannah Davis scored to tie the score at 1-1. Sophomore Lyndsey Godier recorded the assist on the Davis goal. In the 80th minute, senior Erica Kaiping scored the game-winning goal on a shot from just outside the box.
Fontbonne will return to action Saturday when they host Webster University, who is also 4-0 in the SLIAC, at 3 pm.
