The Fontbonne University women's soccer team beat Blackburn College yesterday 5-0 to qualify for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament for the sixth straight year. The Griffins improved to 10-5-4 overall and 6-2-1 in the SLIAC.
Fontbonne will be the #4 seed in the SLIAC Tournament and will play at #1 seed Webster University on Thursday at 6 pm. The #2 seed Greenville College and #3 seed Principia College will play in the other semifinal. The championship game will be on Saturday at a time and location to be determined. The winner of the SLIAC Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III National Tournament.
Yesterday junior Kayla Thorpe scored two goals and added an assist while sophomore Paige Pfankuch recorded a goal and two assists in the victory. Freshman Savannah Davis tallied a goal and an assist while freshman Heather Wiegmann scored her second goal of the season. Junior goalkeeper Meggin Werner had to record just one save to pick up shutout.
The Griffins' five losses this season are the second fewest in program history while the 10 wins are the third most in program history.
Prior to the game, Fontbonne honored seniors Erica Kaiping, Kelly Lange, Jessica Brock and Ava Johnson. Kaiping and Lange were unable to play in the game due to injury.
