Louisville, Ky. - The Fontbonne University women's soccer team remained undefeated in conference play as they beat Spalding University today 1-0. The Griffins improved to 15-2-1 overall and 7-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
With their win today, the Griffins tied a school record, that was set back in 1996, for most wins in a season.
After controlling play most of the first half, Fontbonne got on the scoreboard in the 20th minute when senior Kayla Thorpe scored her fifth goal of the season. Junior Kaitlin Becherer tallied the assist on the Thorpe goal. Fontbonne had several good chances to increase their lead in the first half but couldn't convert.
In the second half, Spalding played their way back into the game and provided pressure on the Griffins' backline. Fontbonne however didnt budge and kept a clean sheet to preserve the victory. Junior Taylor Pulvirenti made four saves in goal for the Griffins to earn her 13th victory. This was Pulvirenti's ninth shutout of the season, setting a new school record.
Fontbonne will try to stay perfect in the SLIAC and break the school record for wins on Tuesday night as they host Westminster College at 6pm. Tuesday's game will also be senior night for the Griffins.
