FULTON, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team saw its three game winning streak get snapped on Wednesday as the Griffins fell 2-1 against Westminster.
Fontbonne (7-9; 4-2 SLIAC), totaled nine shots on the night while Meredith Wendt led with her team-high 13th goal. In net, Mary Beers came away with three saves.
Westminster (7-6; 4-2 SLIAC), concluded with 16 shots, seven of which came from Paige Townsend. Natalie Schulte scored a goal and added an assist, while Gracie Koonce netted the other.
In the first frame, Westminster outshot the Griffins 3-2 in the first 11 minutes of play but both net-minders kept it scoreless. Then, at 14:22, Wendt scored an unassisted goal to give Fontbonne a 1-0 lead.
FBU maintained that lead up until the 36th minute when Schulte scored off an assist from Townsend. Westminster wasn't done there as they took the lead two minutes later on Koonce's goal and they held that one goal advantage the rest of the half.
In the second half, the Blue Jays offense kept up its pressure but were unable to expand on its lead thanks to the strong play in net from Beers and the Griffins defense.
Fontbonne looked to score the equalizer late in the 84th minute but Ellen Weaver's shot was saved. The team had one final chance with 15.0 seconds left, however, Pate's shot went wide and Westminster was able to go on for the one goal win.
The team will look to bounce back this Saturday at MacMurray. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
