Women's Soccer Secures No. 2 Spot In SLIAC Tournament With Win Over Principia
ELSAH, Ill.— The Fontbonne University women’s secured team secured the No. 2 spot in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Principia.
ELSAH, Ill.— The Fontbonne University women's secured team secured the No. 2 spot in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Principia.
The Griffins (10-9; 7-2 SLIAC), outshot Principia 25-9 in the win. Meredith Wendt led the way with two goals, giving her 16 on the year which is a career-high. Jacey Pate and Emily Cardwell also scored, while Mary Beers got the win in net after making six saves.
On the other side of the pitch, Libby Lewis did all she could in net against the Griffins offense, making 10 saves.
After outshooting Principia 6-0 in the first 11 minutes, the team was finally able to break through at 15:10 on Wendt's unassisted goal. Fontbonne had a shot advantage of 4-3 the rest of the way and were able to head into the break on top, 1-0.
In the second half, after seeing a couple of her shots go wide three minutes in, Pate was able to score in the 50th minute to extend the lead out to 2-0. The offense continued its offensive pressure and it paid off once again in the 59th minute.
Cardwell got the ball from Kierstyn Weaver and she beat Lewis to push the lead out to 3-0 at the 59:28 mark. Wendt went on to add another goal for good measure in the 72nd minute to make it a 4-0 final for FBU.
The team will now return to action at home on Thursday night when they'll host No. 3-seeded Greenville in the SLIAC Semifinals. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
