ST. LOUIS, Mo.— The Fontbonne University women's soccer team are geared up for its second straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Championship appearance on Saturday night. The Griffins will take on top seeded Webster University at Soccer Park. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Griffins (11-9; 7-2 SLIAC), advanced to the finals after a thrilling 3-2 (2OT) win against No. 3-seeded Greenville on Thursday night.
The game was tied 2-2 in the second OT, until Jacey Pate scored her ninth goal of the season from the top of the box, securing the 3-2 thrilling win.
Fontbonne dominated play throughout, having a shot advantage of 23-11. Ellen Weaver also scored and contributed an assist, while Leann Smith added the other goal. Meredith Wendt, meanwhile, assisted on all three goals. In net, Makayla Hussong got the win after making five saves.
Webster, meanwhile, advanced to the title game for the sixth straight year after a 2-1 victory over Westminster. Nicole Bascio and Kelsey Hausmann scored for the Gorloks, while as a team, they outshot the Blue Jays, 22-6.
During the regular season, Fontbonne and Webster squared off at Centene Stadium. A goal by Lauren Nuelle in the 33rd minute proved to be enough for Webster to come away with the 1-0 victory.
These two teams are also no stranger to each other in the conference finals as they met there just last season. In that outing, Ellen Weaver scored out of the gate at 2:38. However, Webster netted the equalizer in the 43rd minute and later added the game winner in the 60th to give them its fourth SLIAC Championship in the last five years.
